Dir Sir
International office suggest me to report what happen to us to you.
I and my wife are international students from Taiwan.
We are splashed water to our face form a blue van car on South Road (between Main library and Gray college and close to Gray college). It happened at 4:35 PM 21th February when we back to Ustinov college. And this car ran away to the direction of Ustinov college in south road. Please help to prevent it happen again. Because I heard many students from Asia have the same experience in Durham. Some of they are even thrown stones form the cars. Thanks for your help.

Hello
I am very sorry to hear about the incident which occurred on 21st February. Did you manage to get a registration number of the vehicle involved ? If you, or any of your fellow students have obtained a registration number I can make enquiries to contact the owner of the vehicle.
I have heard of other incidents where things have thrown from cars, but there has been nothing to suggest that anyone is 'targeting' Asian students as general members of the public have also been victims. Durham is a safe place to live, but there is still a small mindless minority who enjoy causing distress to others. I would advise you, as I do others, that if you go out into the city (especially at night) that you do take some precautions. These are common sense things, but are still important to protect your personal safety and safety of your belongings:
- If going out, try not to go out alone and try to plan your route.
- Consider carrying a personal attack alarm. This is a small device which can be carried in a bag or pocket. When the cord is pulled, it produces a very loud noise which may help to make a possible assailant run away. I have these available in my office if you require one.
- Try not to use your mobile phone while outside (especially at night). Obviously when being used the phone normally lights up, making it obvious to a thief and therefore making you an easy target.
- Try not to use a cashpoint at night and be aware of anyone standing too close behind you, and always conceal your PIN.
- Be aware of people around you in general. Obviously, the accent of a foreign student will normally stand out as being different to local people and this may make you more of an easy target to a thief.
- Don't leave any property unattended. This can refer to items left in a college library while looking for a book, or leaving something on a chair or table while you go to the bar or toilet. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to take your property
- Ensure doors and windows are closed/locked when leaving your room. This includes just leaving the room for a few moments.
- When in your room, don't leave valuables unattended where they can be easily seen by passers by. For example, don't leave your laptop unattended near a window
If you do experience any further problems please try to get as much of a description as possible. I realise that these incidents can happen very quickly and that it is not always easy to remember the colour / make / model / registration number of a vehicle, but the more information given to the Police the more chance we have of preventing another incident from happening. If incidents like this are happening to your friends, then please get them to inform the police. This type of behaviour is not acceptable and is not something you should have to just put with because you are a student or because you may be from another country.
As I said before, Durham IS a safe place and I am just giving you these tips as a precaution. I do not want you to think that you are unsafe or that anyone is targeting foreign students. It is even possible that it may be a student who was driving the vehicle you saw. My advice is given so that you and your friends are able to improve your own personal safety and enjoy your stay in Durham.
I have several posters and leaflets available which give more advice on crime prevention and personal safety if you want them.
I hope my advice helps you, but if you wish to speak to me further, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am available at the police station of can visit you at your college.
